Plenary Session: Ongoing hearings under article 7(1) of the TEU regarding Poland and Hungary
Ongoing hearings under article 7(1) of the TEU regarding Poland and Hungary (B9-0032/2020)
Together with the Group of the Greens, I voted in favour of this resolution because the infringement procedure, resulting from Article 7 of the TEU, on Poland and Hungary for serious violations of the values of the European Union is taking too long and has no effect on the behaviour of these two Member States.
An infringement case was opened in March 2018 following several very negative actions in these two countries, including the criminalisation of sexual education, the creation of LGBTI-free zones, attacks on the judiciary and on the freedom of the press and the arts.
We reiterate the request to the Council to involve the European Parliament fully in the hearings process.
In this resolution, we urged the European Commission to ensure that, at the hearings of the case, new developments regarding attacks on the independence of judiciary, freedom of expression, including media freedom, freedom of the arts and sciences and freedom of association are addressed.
In the light of these violations, we ask the Commission to use all the tools at its disposal, including expedited infringement procedures and applications for interim measures before the European Union's Court of Justice.
