Management, conservation and control measures applicable in the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Convention area (A9-0231/2020 - João Ferreira)
I voted in favour of this legislative resolution that establishes the management, conservation and control measures applicable in the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Convention area, which aims to transpose into EU law the said measures, adopted by the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC). The EU fleet in that area consists of around 40 vessels, mainly aimed at catching tuna and swordfish.
This transposition contains, inter alia, provisions on purse-seiners vessels fishing for tropical tuna, prohibition of fishing near data buoys, provisions concerning fishing in the vicinity of fish aggregating devices, their deployment, design and set of rules for transhipments in port. It sets out measures aimed at protecting certain marine species present in the area covered by the IATTC Convention, such as white-tip sharks, silk sharks, hammerhead sharks and mobulid rays. These measures include obligations to provide data and release certain animals, as well as provisions related to the protection of sea turtles and sea birds.
