Plenary Session: EC/Mauritania Fisheries Partnership Agreement: extension of the Protocol
EC/Mauritania Fisheries Partnership Agreement: extension of the Protocol (A9-0244/2020 - Annie Schreijer-Pierik)
I voted in favour of this second extension of the Protocol setting out the fishing opportunities provided for in the Fisheries Partnership Agreement between the EU and Mauritania, which expired in November. However, we believe that agreements of this type cannot continue to enter into force provisionally without the consent of the EP, which should not be hampered by the extension of the existing protocols. We continue to closely monitor negotiations related to the protocol that, hopefully, will be concluded soon and will enter the normal legislative process.
The Group of the Greens/EFA supported the agreement in 2016 mainly due to increased sectoral support to local fishermen and the fact that Mauritania makes public all fisheries agreements with third countries. We now call on the Commission to ensure that the protocol under negotiation supports the Mauritanian authorities in implementing an effective mechanism for monitoring and controlling the fishmeal industry and in requiring scientific data on all pelagic fisheries and landing points. We also insist that the Commission carry out a regional management of small pelagics, since Mauritania shares these stocks with Morocco, the Gambia and Senegal.
