PAN ensures first vice-chair of the Committee on Agriculture in the European Parliament
Brussels, 10 July 2019- PAN ensured the vice-chair of the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development in the European Parliament. Francisco Guerreiro was today elected vice-chair of the committee, after a negotiation with the Greens/EFA, our group in the EP.
Each committee has a chairperson and four vice-chairs. In the case of the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development, the Greens got the first of four vice-chairs, whose place Francisco Guerreiro negotiated with the rest of the MEPs of the Greens, winning it from 48 full members and 48 substitutes.
The election of the MEP took place during the first session of the committee and it is a clear vote of confidence in the party on the part of the European family.
“With this election we strengthen the influence of PAN in the Greens, giving Portugal a place of prominence regarding other Member States. We are prepared to take responsabilities and leave politically relevant contributions, especially in a European context where it is important to prioritize the mitigation of Climate Change”, says PAN’s MEP, Francisco Guerreiro.
In addition to replacing the committee's president in situations of absence, the position confers several responsibilities to Francisco Guerreiro, such as representing the commission in different contexts and occasions.
It will also be up to the MEP to negotiate laws with the Ministers of Agriculture of the various Member States, enforcing PAN’s principles in a European context. Within the scope of his work as vice-chair of the committee, these principles will assume special relevance in certain contexts: Francisco Guerreiro will have the opportunity, for example, to visit places such as intensive agricultural farms and to sensitize other MEPs to the problem of highly polluting industries and their implication in climate deterioration.
