MEP Francisco Guerreiro signs petition to end import of shark fins
Brussels, 20 November 2020 – The removal of shark fins is prohibited in European waters, however, the European Union (EU) continues to import shark fins, which is why Francisco Guerreiro (Greens/EFA) signed a petition calling for an end to these imports.
The petition “Ban the Importation of Shark Fins” states that in addition to the fact that shark products pose a risk to public health because they contain high levels of mercury, the interruption of this trade would also allow safeguarding endangered shark species.
“Sharks play a vital role in our marine ecosystem, therefore, without them, it could be detrimental. There are even many endangered sharks such as the Great Hammerhead and Scalloped Hammerhead being hunted for this trade,” states the petition.
