Greens/EFA MEP asks Donald Trump to pardon Snowden
Lisbon, 17 August 2020 – In a letter to Donald Trump, MEP Francisco Guerreiro (Greens/EFA) asked him to grant a presidential pardon to former CIA consultant Edward Snowden.
Several MEPs expressed their support to Snowden after learning about Donald Trump’s intention to re-investigate the former consultant’s case.
Already in 2015, the European Parliament demanded protection of the activist and called on EU Member States to "drop any criminal charges, grant him protection and consequently prevent extradition or rendition by third parties, in recognition of his status as whistle-blower and international human rights defender".
In 2013, Edward Snowden disclosed highly classified information regarding the scope of US government’s surveillance capabilities and their potential threat to civil rights of Americans and people overseas. In order to avoid extradition, he has remained in Russia ever since as a political refugee.
