Towards a strong and sustainable EU algae sector
Strasbourg, May 10, 2023 - I voted in favor of the resolution “Towards a strong and sustainable EU algae sector”.
The European algae industry has considerable potential to grow and contribute to critical challenges such as EU carbon neutrality, an innovative food system that ensures access to nutritious and sustainable food and, ultimately, support for a sustainable and circular European bioeconomy. It is important to diversify the economic activity and sources of income of communities in coastal areas. Therefore, the reorientation of fishermen's careers towards regenerative marine aquaculture should be encouraged and supported through pilot projects. The resolution calls on the Commission to adequately fund the EU seaweed sector, and on Member States to promote seaweed production, as well as to facilitate the use and development of seaweed as food and feed.
However, the expected growth in the development of the algae sector in the EU in the coming years must also be linked to the protection of the environment and marine ecosystems. It is necessary to develop this sector in a way that does not affect the balance of marine ecosystems and avoids repeating the same environmental mistakes made on land.
