Surface and groundwater pollutants

Water pollution is a serious problem. The Commission's proposal is welcome as a reinforcement of current standards, but still insufficient. Environmental quality standards (EQS) should be set for the whole group of “eternal chemicals” (PFAS), as well as for the whole group of Bisphenols. Environmental quality standards need to be stricter for pesticides, including in particular glyphosate, and for pharmaceuticals. As all key legislation dealing with hazardous substances is Union legislation, the Commission should be obliged to propose EU-wide actions if and when Member States alone fail to achieve the EQS.
