The impact of illegal fishing on food security: the role of the European Union
I voted in favor of the report on the impact of illegal fishing on food security: the role of the European Union. Illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing poses a significant threat to marine ecosystems, the socio-economic well-being of fisheries-dependent communities, the global reputation of the fisheries sector and international efforts to improve ocean governance. Given its central role in the global seafood market, the European Union is in a privileged position to shape and lead international sustainable fishing practices.
In general terms, we tabled several amendments that were included in the final text, mainly emphasizing that it is not only foreign fleets that are guilty of IUU fishing, but that there are also obligations for EU fleets, as well as the need to increase the EU's efforts against IUU fishing in international forums.
