Sustainable maritime fuels (FuelEU Maritime Initiative)
Strasbourg, 10 July 2023 - I voted in favor of the report on the proposal for a regulation on the use of renewable and low-carbon fuels for maritime transport. This Regulation is an integral part of the Fit for 55 package and establishes a common EU framework to increase the development, production and use of low-carbon fuels in maritime transport. The proposal establishes a technology-neutral emissions reduction path that obliges shipowners and operators to gradually reduce emissions from their ships. The proposal also establishes an obligation for ships to connect to a shore-based power supply in certain situations, in order to limit harmful air pollution. Although it is not a perfect text and does not include, for example, fishing vessels, the Regulation is a step in the right direction and will be the first in the world to oblige the maritime sector to use more sustainable fuels.
