Review of the EU Emissions Trading System for aviation
Strasbourg, April 18, 2023 - I voted in favor of the report on the proposal for a directive on the contribution of the aviation sector to the Union's economy-wide emissions reduction target.
The aviation sector generates 15.7% of CO2 emissions from EU transport, and according to Eurocontrol, these emissions are expected to increase by 44% by 2050 compared to 2019. In addition to CO2, aviation emits other substances whose climate impact is twice that of CO2 emissions. However, this sector has remained outside the scope of EU climate policy for too long, while rail transport, a much more environmentally friendly mode of transport, has been paying the full price of CO2 emissions on the electricity consumed for two decades. Thanks to pressure from our Group, the aviation sector is finally being forced to pay a greater contribution towards achieving climate goals. If the international CORSIA scheme does not become more ambitious, we will price the emissions not only from our domestic flights but also from international flights through the European Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS).
