Report on the European Parliament recommendation to the Council, the Commission and the Vice-President of the Commission/High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy on the new EU enlargement strategy

I voted in favor of this report on the EU's new enlargement strategy. The EU's enlargement policy is the most effective Community instrument for guaranteeing peace, prosperity and fundamental values on the European continent. Unfortunately, broken promises by the EU and a lack of political will on both sides have undermined its effectiveness. In the context of Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine, ensuring and restoring the credibility of the EU's enlargement policy and positioning the EU as a reliable and credible partner and geopolitical actor is increasingly important. The Western Balkans and Eastern Partnership countries are an area of strategic and geopolitical competition prone to destabilization. The stability, security and democratic resilience of the accession countries are inextricably linked to the EU's own security, stability and democratic resilience. At the same time, with all these geopolitical challenges in mind, we need to ensure that accession is a merit-based process, focused on the implementation of the EU acquis, in particular with regard to the political criteria and the rule of law.
