Plenary Session: The EU’s role in protecting and restoring the world’s forests
The EU’s role in protecting and restoring the world’s forests (A9-0143/2020 - Stanislav Polčák)
I voted in favour of this report because of its environmentally and socially favorable content. It contains much needed considerations such as: mandatory due diligence for companies that place products associated with forestry risks on the EU market; mandatory due diligence requirements for financial institutions to ensure that no EU financial or banking entity is linked to deforestation and human rights violations; mandatory targets and adequate funding for the protection and restoration of forest ecosystems, especially primary forests; strong language regarding the urgent need to realign EU energy policy with the aim of fighting deforestation; enhanced consideration and support for indigenous communities, in particular women; and enhanced support for environmental advocates and increased access to justice.
