Plenary Session: The EU’s public health strategy post-COVID-19
The EU’s public health strategy post-COVID-19 (RC-B9-0216/2020)
I voted in favour of this resolution because I am convinced that the European Union (EU) plays an important role in improving public health, preventing and managing diseases, minimizing sources of danger to human health and harmonizing health strategies between European countries.
Thus, with this text, we propose the creation of a European health response mechanism to respond to this type of crisis, strengthen operational coordination and monitor the creation and mobilization of the strategic reserve of medicines and medical equipment.
We also demand that the future EU pharmaceutical strategy includes measures to increase the production of active ingredients and essential medicines in Europe and to diversify the supply chain to ensure supply and access at affordable prices.
We remind you that more infections and deaths from COVID-19 can occur if a prudent approach is not taken, and we therefore ask that steps be taken to ensure that all citizens of the world have a rapid, equitable and affordable access to all future developed vaccines and treatments for COVID-19 as soon as they become available. Finally, we call for a more systematic EU joint procurement to avoid competition between Member States.
