Plenary session: Objection pursuant to Rule 112(2) and (3): Active substances, including flumioxazine
Objection pursuant to Rule 112(2) and (3): Active substances, including flumioxazine (B9-0203/2020)
I voted in favour of this objection to the extension of the approval periods of various active substances, in line with the Group of the Greens/EFA.
I believe that the Commission draft is not consistent with Union law, as it does not respect the precautionary principle. In particular, flumioxazine has a high risk of bioconcentration, it is highly toxic to algae and aquatic plants, and is moderately toxic to earthworms, honey bees, fish, and aquatic invertebrates.
I agree with the European Parliament (EP) resolution when it states that it is unacceptable that a substance that meets the exclusion criteria for active mutagenic, carcinogenic and/or toxic substances for reproduction, or that has endocrine disrupting properties, intended to protect human and environmental health, continue to be authorized for use in the EU, putting public and environmental health at risk.
The resolution also urges Member States to carry out an appropriate reassessment of approvals of active substances and to ensure that current delays are resolved as soon as possible.
It should be noted that the EP had already opposed the extension of the approval of flumioxazine last year.
