Plenary Session: Implementation of the EU water legislation
Implementation of the EU water legislation (B9-0401/2020)
I voted in favour of this resolution because it clearly establishes what the coordinated plan of the EU should be in view of the vital resource water is, having concluded that the Water Framework Directive does not need to be revised, putting an end to the current legal uncertainty on this issue.
It should be emphasized that the objectives set out in the Water Framework Directive have not been achieved (with clear consequences for the quality of water resources in the EU, with about half of them not being of good quality), mainly due to inadequacy in terms of financing, which leads to insufficient implementation/application of the respective vectors, from which the precautionary and polluter pays principles stand out.
Consequently, there is an urgent need for Member States governments and authorities to take coordinated action in order to restore and improve water quality, including the timely reinforcement of financial and human resources (betting on workers specialization) to achieve full compliance with the Water Framework Directive as soon as possible (the year 2027 being projected as the maximum time limit).
Finally, it is important to mention the imperative need to weigh the benefits and the harmful effects of hydroelectric energy production.
