Plenary Session: EU Pollinators Initiative
EU Pollinators Initiative (B9-0233/2019)
I voted in favour of this resolution, in line with the Group of the Greens, as it aims to halt the decline in pollinating insects populations. These animals play an important role in maintaining the natural balance of ecosystems, being essential for their survival.
Agricultural production, which depends on the existence of these animals, must follow a model that protects them. A fundamental objective in the development of the future common agricultural policy (CAP) must be to increase biodiversity, which promotes the quality of pollinator habitats, also on agricultural land. The CAP should support, for example, the reduction of the use of pesticides and mineral fertilizers and encourage polyculture and crop rotation.
This resolution calls on the Commission to support an extension of the list of banned pesticides to all those composed of neonicotinoids; call on Member States to synchronize pesticide assessment strategies with each other; consider it important that EFSA investigate the effect of replacing current pesticides and the existence of non-chemical methods on the market; and conclude that it is vital to support research that studies and promotes agroecological transition and alternative methods of 'pest management' that do not compromise the lives of pollinators.
