Plenary Session: COP15 to the Convention on Biological Diversity
COP15 to the Convention on Biological Diversity (Kunming 2020) (B9-0035/2020)
In line with the vote of the Group of the Greens/Greens/EFA, I voted in favour of the resolution that represents the European Parliament's position for the 15th meeting of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (COP15).
As the Global Strategic Plan for Biodiversity will come to an end in 2020 – and without making much progress towards meeting the Aichi Targets – it is essential that Parliament takes a firmer and more ambitious position in relation to the next global strategy. The resolution thus contains important goals that aim to protect global biodiversity and ensure the restoration of degraded areas in our ecosystems.
Among other aspects, the resolution calls for the establishment of binding targets (EU and Member States) to cover at least 30% of protected areas and 30% of degraded areas (proposals by the Greens/EFA).
In addition to this, and despite opposition from the EPP and Renew Europe political groups, it was established that Parliament advocates that 10% of the MFF budget should be channeled towards the protection of biodiversity.
