Plenary Session: Chemicals strategy for sustainability
Chemicals strategy for sustainability (B9-0222/2020)
I voted in favour of this resolution by the ENVI Committee, which I consider to be quite exhaustive and strong. The resolution fits the policy on chemicals in a context of global sustainability and calls for a comprehensive strategy to achieve the indispensable paradigm shift with a view to implementing the European Green Deal's "zero pollution" ambition for a toxic-free environment.
The resolution calls for priority to be given to prevention rather than control measures, to closing all regulatory gaps, to rapidly eliminating substances of very high concern (notably endocrine disruptors and persistent chemicals), and to better implementing REACH, as well as strengthening it.
The sustainable political strategy in the field of chemicals does not only protect our health. It is also an opportunity for European industry to invest in sustainable products. Non-polluting chemistry "made in Europe" will make European industry future-proof. Only a sustainable industry will be able to be competitive and guarantee the European chemical industry’s thousands of jobs.
