Plenary session: Allocation of slots at Community airports: common rules
Allocation of slots at Community airports: common rules
I voted in favour of this regulation, which introduces temporary changes to EU aviation rules due to the impact of the Covid-19 outbreak on this industry, allowing carriers to keep their airport slots even if they do not operate flights.
Unfortunately, the overall review of this regulation was held up in the Council for several years, and this emergency proposal now aims to temporarily amend the current regulation (until 24 October 2020, with a possible extension in September) to allow airlines to retain their rights to unused slots during the current crisis.
Under European rules, airlines are required to use 80% of the slots they have at airports in order to keep them the following year. In order not to risk losing them, the companies ended up carrying out the so-called 'ghost flights', meaning that they made the flights even when they had no passengers.
