Parliament votes in favour of resolution on Hong Kong situation
Brussels, 19 June 2020 - MEPs voted in favour of a resolution, presented by the Greens/EFA group, on the situation in Hong Kong.
The initiative condemns the Chinese government's attempts to further undermine democracy and urgently calls for all charges against peaceful protesters to be dropped.
The resolution states that the Chinese Communist Party's policy of abandoning the "One country, two systems" approach is jeopardizing Hong Kong's autonomy and fueling tension across the region.
“I express deep concerns about the introduction by the Chinese parliament of national security legislation in Hong Kong. This is direct and intentional attack on the city and region’s autonomy, the rule of law, and fundamental freedoms,” comments MEP Francisco Guerreiro.
The text also calls for the creation of a United Nations (UN) Special Envoy for the situation in Hong Kong and urges the European Union and its Member States to consider presenting a legislative initiative to the International Court of Justice.
