Parliament promotes EU-wide collective action in collective redress agreement
Lisbon, 23 June 2020 - The Council, the Commission and the European Parliament (EP) concluded an agreement on a new directive on collective actions to protect the collective interests of consumers.
The agreement provides, inter alia, that consumer organizations and independent public bodies can take legal actions on behalf of consumers in the courts, in order to stop violations and even demand compensation, in what is known as “collective redress”.
Among other issues, the EP has managed to demand that air and passenger rights be made mandatory in a collective action before the courts of the entire European Union (EU) in the final agreement - a situation exacerbated recently due to the Covid-19 outbreak.
The parliamentary group of the Greens/EFA has been asking for the possibility of collective action across the EU with the diesel scandal being the trigger for strengthening consumer protection and the possibility for consumers to assert their rights in court in collective actions.
