PAN MEP questions Commission about animal abuse scandal in German lab
Brussels, 18 November 2019- MEP Francisco Guerreiro (PAN) sent today a priority question to the European Commission about procedures being taken in the face of animal abuses committed by the Laboratory of Pharmacology and Toxicology (LPT), in Germany, revealed by a recent undercover investigation.
The investigation was made by animal welfare NGOs Cruelty Free International and SOKO Tierschutz and revealed shocking videos of animal health and welfare violations, pointing to a clear breach of the law protecting animals used for scientific purposes (Directive 2010/63/EU).
Francisco Guerreiro asked if the Commission can confirm that LPT is in breach of Directive 2010/63/EU and, if so, if this is, at least in part, attributable to incorrect transposition thereof by Germany. The MEP also questioned if the Commission intends to ensure that action is taken against this particular laboratory and that such abuses are not taking place in other Member States.
The Commission was also asked to provide details of current complaints regarding transposition by the Member States of Directive 2010/63/EU, given the institution’s silence to previous questions by the European Greens.
The scandal has made LPT announce that the lab in question will close in 29 February 2020. However, two others will remain active and following the same animal testing policy.
