Murder of George Floyd: PAN MEP calls for strong EU action against racism
Lisbon, 2 June 2020 – MEP Francisco Guerreiro (PAN) signs a letter calling on the European Commission (EC) to publish an official statement condemning the violations of fundamental rights in the United States of America, including the right to life, freedom of expression and freedom of assembly.
In a letter to the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and the Commissioners for Justice and Equality, the signatories call on the EC to issue a statement condemning the inflammatory words and actions of President Donald Trump (especially concerning the threat of military force towards citizens), acknowledge and condemn police brutality within the European Union and to convene a European Anti-Racism Summit on combatting structural discrimination in Europe, among other actions.
The letter also mentions the disturbing stance by the US President, who openly voiced his resentment for the protestors and even incited violence towards them by tweeting, on May 29, “when the looting starts, the shooting starts” – a 1967 quote from a racist Miami Police chief.
We must come together to address the scourge of racism both here in the European Union and abroad.
