Multi-annual management plan for bluefin tuna in the Eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean
I voted in favor of the recommendation for second reading on the Council's position at first reading, with a view to the adoption of the Regulation establishing a multi-annual management plan for bluefin tuna in the Eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean. This report concludes a 3-year long legislative process, the Council having rejected the report at first reading, despite a political agreement having been reached at the trialogue 2 years ago.
This report includes provisions that will make it possible to allocate more tuna fishing quotas to the artisanal fleet, which is usually not sufficiently taken into account when Member States distribute fishing opportunities to their national fleets.
We have also requested that quotas (in this case: for tuna) be distributed by Member States to their national fleets in a way that reflects the wording of Article 17 of the Common Fisheries Policy.
