MEPs vote in favour of the EU’s Disability Strategy resolution
Brussels, 19 June 2020 - MEPs today voted in favour of the European Union’s Disability Strategy resolution, urging the Commission to present a distributed, ambitious and long-term European Disability Strategy after 2020.
At the initiative of the Greens/European Free Alliance (Greens/EFA) group, a resolution on the EU Disability Strategy challenges the Commission to come up with a package of binding targets, deadlines and monitoring for the implementation of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in EU Member States.
It also includes independent living, housing, employment, freedom of movement, as well as an assessment of human rights violations suffered during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Greens/EFA welcome this text and the inclusion of the group’s amendments on the impact of Covid-19 on the community of people with disabilities.
The Commission will present a proposal next year.
