MEPs question Commission on live bait fishing ban Francisco Guerreiro MEP, along with other colleagues, questioned the European Commission on its position regarding the ban on live bait fishing.
Brussels, January 20, 2023 - Francisco Guerreiro MEP, along with other colleagues, questioned the European Commission on its position regarding the ban on live bait fishing.
Subject: Commission position on the ban on live bait fishing
During the consultation held at the Conference on the Future of Europe in early 2022[1], citizens called on the European Union to ban live bait fishing.
This cruel fishing practice consists of using a live vertebrate animal, usually a fish, as bait. During their breeding, transportation to market and use as bait, these fish undergo unacceptable suffering. In addition, this technique presents environmental risks, such as the spread of diseases and the proliferation of so-called invasive species.
Several European countries, such as Germany, Austria (in most Länder), Scotland, Ireland (in freshwater) and Switzerland, have already banned this technique. In France, several cities are calling for a ban on the practice. This is the case, for example, in Paris, Saint-Étienne and the Grenoble metropolitan area.
1. In view of the environmental challenges and the suffering of the animals concerned, does the Commission intend to ban live bait fishing?
2. Given that the fish used as live bait may be farmed, can the Commission envisage banning the farming of animals intended for use as live bait?
3. Finally, does the Commission intend to ban the sale of animals intended for use as live bait?
