Brussels, 27 October 2020 - MEPs call on Spanish authorities not to interfere with the freedom of expression of Catalan universities.
In October 2019, all seven Catalan public universities signed a joint manifesto rejecting the conviction of Catalan political and civic leaders to lengthy prison terms for having participated in the organization of a referendum on independence in Catalonia.
A year later, in October 2020, a judge ruled against the University of Barcelona, declaring the manifesto “null and void”. The judge considered that the declaration “violates the right to education, freedom of expression and ideological freedom” and does not comply with the University's “duty of neutrality”.
