MEPs call for swift EU action in Turkey and Syria due to earthquake
Brussels, February 9, 2023 - MEPs from various parliamentary groups, including Francisco Guerreiro, have addressed a letter to the European Commission emphasizing the vital need for swift action due to the tragedy in Turkey and Syria. In particular, the creation of an EU Humanitarian Air Bridge or humanitarian corridor and providing technical assistance to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid to Syria from Turkey.
In this letter, MEPs reveal their shock when the terrible news about the earthquake in Turkey and Syria broke on Monday morning. They emphasize that more than 16,000 people had died by the time the letter was sent and that this number is likely to rise, especially if international humanitarian aid is not urgently stepped up. They argue that a rich and powerful actor like the European Union must respond quickly by making use of its wide range of tools.
