MEPs against closing six of the eight border crossings between Spain and France
Brussels, January 18, 2023 - Around 30 MEPs, including Francisco Guerreiro, have sent a letter to President Macron (France) and President Sanchez (Spain), asking them to revoke Macron's instruction to close six of the eight border crossings between Spain and France.
On January 8, 2021, based on the fight against the terrorist threat and secondary movements of migrants, the prefect of the Pyrénées Orientales department issued a decree establishing the de facto closure of the “authorized crossing points” between France and Spain, and in particular the Coll de Banyuls.
This decision was implemented with the installation of stones and blocks prohibiting anyone from using the crossing, whether on foot or by vehicle. This situation is not without its constraints for permanent residents on both sides of the border, who are forced to make long journeys that are difficult to bear.
