Media Freedom Regulation
I voted in favor of the report on the proposal for a regulation establishing a common framework for media services in the internal market (Freedom of the Media Regulation). This Media Freedom Regulation aims to protect the independence of journalists and the plurality of the media throughout Europe. The Group of the Greens/European Free Alliance has long been committed to establishing EU-wide rules that address issues such as media market monopolies, the fair allocation of state funding and the independence of public service media and national regulatory authorities. The Group also managed to include strong safeguards regarding the protection of journalistic sources. On the negative side, it is regrettable that there is no majority in Parliament for a fundamental and comprehensive ban on the use of spyware. Governments are not called upon to monitor journalists' cell phones. However, the biggest threat to press freedom in the European Union comes from politically controlled media empires.
