Labeling organic pet food

The Commission's proposal is one of the last bricks in the new organic regulatory framework, correcting an error in the basic text that aligned organic pet food with feed production rules, instead of with food production rules.Although organic pet food concerns a very small market (5-6% of the pet food market), it is growing and is a necessary outlet for organic meat cuts that are not sold as food, as well as to avoid waste. As such, the adoption of this text will contribute to the Farm to Fork objective of reaching 25% of agricultural areas in organic products.The inter-institutional negotiations were swift, as positions were narrow, and led to few changes compared to the Commission's draft, mainly aimed at further aligning the rules on organic pet food with those on human food and adding the necessary transitional rules.
