Implementation of the Common Fisheries Policy and future prospects
I voted against this own-initiative report on the state of implementation of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) and future prospects.
The aim of this report was to list all the possible criticisms and put pressure on the Commission to review the Common Fisheries Policy. Its main arguments were, among others, the following:
- “The implementation of the CFP has focused too much on its environmental provisions”;
- “The landing obligation is not feasible”;
- “All fish stocks cannot be fished at the same sustainable level as provided for in the CFP (MSY level)”;
- “The definition of fishing capacity should be revised to allow for improved energy efficiency and working conditions.”
- “The definition of ‘small-scale fishing’ should be revised”.
All these arguments are scientifically false or distorted, drawn up in close collaboration with the industrial fishing sector. Only one of our amendments was adopted, aimed at extending the scope of the animal welfare policy to fisheries in the future. Despite this slight positive aspect, we found it impossible to support a list of fallacious claims. The CFP must be fully implemented properly, not revised.
