Human rights and democracy in the world and the European Union's policy on the matter
I voted in favor of this report on human rights and democracy in the world and the European Union's policy on the matter, which is a response to the “Annual Report on Human Rights and Democracy in the World” prepared by the European External Action Service and approved by the Council every year during the second half of the year. The European Parliament takes this opportunity to comment and issue recommendations on the EU's human rights policy in general.
The Green Group has managed to incorporate many positive elements into the text, not least for the EU to set an example on human rights so as not to undermine its credibility at global level. The EU must also prevent any human rights violations linked to its own policies, projects and financing, including by the EIB, and must set up a complaints mechanism for individuals whose rights would have been violated by EU activities in their countries. In addition, the report now highlights the essential work of human rights and environmental defenders, recognizing the interconnection and interdependence between biodiversity and human rights.
