Greens defend offshore energy as an integral part of the Green Deal
Brussels, 19 November 2020- The European Commission (EC) today launched the first offshore strategy for renewable energy. The goal is to increase the installed capacity of wind energy by 2050, with a target of 60 gigawatts by 2030 and 300 gigawatts by 2050.
MEP Grace O'Sullivan (Greens/EFA), of the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety, comments that "offshore wind energy should be an integral part of the European Green Deal, and we welcome these first steps taken by the European Commission.” The use of offshore wind power is critical to achieving a climate neutral Europe.
By 2030, renewable energies are expected to contribute up to 40% of the energy supply. The EC's goal is to achieve a 55% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. The Parliamentary Group of the Greens/European Free Alliance argues that the reduction should target 65%.
