Generational renewal on the farms of the future in the EU

Launched in 1965 to assess the economic and financial situation of farms, the Farm Accountancy Data Network (FADN) now deserves an update to meet contemporary needs for sustainability data, including the collection of relevant data to measure progress towards farm-to-fork targets. The upgrade of the network from an accounting to a fully-fledged sustainability data network - a new Farm Sustainability Data Network (FSDN) - is, however, primarily an opportunity to provide policymakers with a wider range of data when planning the next - hopefully more sustainable - CAP.


After the trialogue, the Commission now has to follow a clear annex with specific topics, to serve as a basis for the FSDN as it develops data topics on new environmental and social dimensions. As the participation of individual farms remains voluntary, Member States must ensure a strong incentive plan to encourage farmers' participation and provide adequate means to make the aggregate results of the NSDS public.


The provisional political agreement was reached in June 2023.
