Francisco Guerreiro MEP asks Commission about protein strategy
Brussels, March 14, 2023 - Francisco Guerreiro MEP questioned the European Commission about the protein strategy and recognizes it as an opportunity to support the transition to plant-based diets.
See the question below:
Subject: Protein strategy - an opportunity to support the transition to plant-based diets
The recently published EU agricultural outlook report1 predicts that human consumption of pulses in the EU will increase significantly (55 %) by 2032. However, pulses will continue to be mainly used in Europe for animal feed (3.9 million tons for animal feed compared to 2.6 million tons for human feed).
1. In light of this development, the Commission recognizes that its future protein strategy should pay substantial attention to increasing the cultivation of crops for human consumption and not only for use in animal feed, so that it supports the transition to plant-based diets and aligns with the EU's Farm to Fork Strategy and the objectives of the EU's Farm to Fork Strategy.
2. Can the Commission provide details of how it intends to consult stakeholders on the priorities to be set for this strategy?
