Francisco Guerreiro alerts to situation of LGBTI community in Russia
Brussels, 18 September 2020 – In a letter to Josep Borrell, the European Commission’s High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs, several members of the European Parliament drew attention to the worsening situation of the LGBTI community in Russia, that, in the light of current local elections, has been “used as a scapegoat".
In this context, the MEPs call on Josep Borrell to “express the deepest concern with the worsening of the situation of LGBTI rights in Russia”, as per the letter.
“It is imperative that Russia fulfills its obligations under international law and protects people's fundamental rights. We cannot remain silent while, in a neighbouring country, so many people are deprived of their basic human rights.”
