Francisco Guerreiro against Portuguese proposal to maintain the Transportation of Live Animals
Brussels, January 26, 2023 - The European Parliament's Animal Welfare Intergroup, of which MEP Francisco Guerreiro is vice-chair, has sent a letter to the European Commission asking for Commissioner Stella Kyriakides' intervention in guaranteeing restrictions on the transport of live animals in the next revision of animal welfare legislation.
The letter is a response to the initiative of the Portuguese Minister for Agriculture, Maria do Céu Antunes, to take a proposal to make the transport of live animals more flexible and deregulated to the European Council on January 30. This position goes against the conclusions of the report by the Special Committee of Inquiry into the Welfare of Live Animal Transportation and undermines the expectations of millions of European citizens who want to see an end to this transportation practice.
Francisco Guerreiro MEP emphasizes his position against the Minister of Agriculture's relaxation of measures on the Transport of Live Animals and states that such a political position is a compromise with the livestock lobby.
