Fisheries in the area covered by the Agreement of the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM)

Strasbourg, 12 July 2023 - I voted in favor of the report on the proposal for a regulation on certain provisions applicable to fishing in the GFCM (General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean) Agreement Area.
This report closes the trialogue agreement on the transposition of certain provisions adopted at international level in 2018 and 2019 to manage fisheries in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea.

The text includes conservation measures, control, cooperation, information and regional research programs. These include technical and conservation measures, in particular to reduce the impact of fishing activities on certain marine species (including sharks and rays) and incidental catches, to establish restricted fishing areas and temporary closures, and to regulate which fishing gear can be used.
