Evaluation of the new Commission communication on the outermost regions

Strasbourg, June 13, 2023 - I voted in favor of the report on the evaluation of the European Commission's new communication on the outermost regions. The outermost regions (ORs) are remote territories with very specific challenges and advantages that sometimes contrast sharply with the rest of the EU. More than most other regions, they require a tailored approach to EU policies and greatly need cohesion policy to promote their social, economic and territorial convergence with the continent. There are various derogations for these regions in order to adapt to their specificities, most of which are correct and necessary, but it remains important to check them regularly and ensure that they are applied as intended. We welcome the Commission's strategy to “put people first, ensure sustainable and inclusive growth and unlock the potential of the EU's outermost regions”. However, the social perspective, focusing on OR communities, as well as green jobs and the blue economy, should be further strengthened.
