European Union Drugs Agency
Strasbourg, June 13, 2023 - The Greens/EFA welcome the strengthening of the new mandate of the EU Medicines Agency, which will reflect the social, health and human rights dimensions of the drugs phenomenon, as we were concerned about the safety-oriented approach of the Commission's original proposal.
Drug policies must promote social justice and human rights. The new EU Medicines Agency should monitor, evaluate and respond to the medicines phenomenon in a holistic way, taking into account the impact and consequences of the medicines phenomenon on individuals. We also welcome the greater involvement of the scientific community, academia, civil society organizations and affected communities, including people who use drugs, as well as the requirement for additional transparency and the enhanced role of the EP in appointing experts and the Executive Director of the agency.
