European Parliament votes in favour of serious action in relation to the rule of law
Brussels, 7 October 2020 - The European Parliament today voted overwhelmingly in favour of establishing a European Union Mechanism for Democracy, the Rule of Law and Fundamental Rights.
The Parliament's vote reaffirms the commitment of MEPs to establish a comprehensive approach to the rule of law, rather than ineffective instruments spread across different areas.
The DRF would have an annual interinstitutional process covering all Member States, all Union values (including democracy and fundamental rights) and the replacement of existing instruments, as well as additional ones, such as conditionality.
“With the proposal for the new mechanism, the Parliament reaffirms having a central role in the fight for democracy,” affirms MEP Francisco Guerreiro (Greens/EFA).
