EU Strategy for Sustainable and Circular Textiles
Brussels, June 1, 2023 - I voted in favor of this report on an EU Strategy for Sustainable and Circular Textiles. Currently, most textiles are completely unsustainable. The European Parliament therefore stresses the urgency of ending fast fashion and making textile production more circular, sustainable and fair.We promote a textile sector that is socially and ecologically sustainable - and where excessive production and consumption are reduced. We welcome the Commission's Sustainable Textiles Strategy and its ambition for 2030.
However, we note clear shortcomings, in particular the absence of climate targets for the sector (which we call on the Commission to set by 2025), as well as other legislative measures to reduce overconsumption and improve social aspects.Textile value chains are global, as are the environmental and social impacts of textile production and consumption in Europe. We call for a paradigm shift in the fashion industry to end overproduction and unsustainable consumption, prevent gender-based discrimination and better address social impacts outside the EU.
