EC/Kiribati Fisheries Partnership Agreement (2023-2028). Implementing Protocol
I voted in favor of the recommendation on the proposal for a Council decision on the conclusion, on behalf of the Union, of the Protocol for the implementation of the Fisheries Partnership Agreement between the European Community and the Republic of Kiribati,
The Protocol will run for five years and will provide Kiribati with significant economic support. The fish stocks targeted by EU fleets may not be overexploited. The aim of the new Protocol is to grant fishing opportunities to EU Member States' vessels in Kiribati's fishing zones, in accordance with the scientific advice and recommendations of the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission. The new protocol allows EU Member States' vessels to fish for tuna species in Kiribati waters and offers fishing opportunities to four tuna seiners, with access to Kiribati waters for 160 days per year, with additional days per year available to EU Member States' vessels on request. The Union's annual financial contribution will be EUR 760 000.
