Detergents and surfactants
The ENVI report on detergents is a win-win: for water and environmental protection, consumer rights and animal welfare. We have significantly improved the Commission's rather empty proposal - guaranteeing high-quality detergents, more innovation and support for European pioneers.
Toxic substances in washing powder and cleaning products harm the health of people and animals and pollute our drinking water. The ENVI committee voted for a strong mandate for negotiations with the Council. We want fewer phosphates and phosphorus in detergents - and for the first time we have also set limit values for industrial detergents. The ENVI report includes easily understandable and readable labeling, including clear information on the correct dosage and an end to the testing of detergents on animals. We want to make all detergents biodegradable and remove persistent substances that can remain in the environment for decades.
The EPP has once again succeeded in holding back Europe's transition to a toxic-free environment by opposing any action to remove the most dangerous chemicals, such as endocrine disruptors, from detergents.
I voted in favor.
