Consumer protection in online video games: a single European market approach
I voted in favor of the report on “Consumer protection in online video games: a single European market approach”. Video games are a very popular form of entertainment among European citizens of all ages. However, the evolving business models, which sometimes lack transparency, raise questions both for consumer protection in general and for the protection of minors. Everyone, especially minors, should be able to play online games in a safe, fair and fun way. We must put an end to manipulative, misleading and addictive practices in online gaming.
The report highlights
the economic and social importance of online gaming and that, despite the economic size of the sector and its impact, online gaming has received relatively little attention from policymakers. In particular, Parliament calls for greater up-front transparency for users regarding the additional costs involved in the game, such as in-game purchases, extension packs, pay-to-win, loot boxes and the real cost of the virtual currencies used in the games.
