Conservation and enforcement measures applicable in the Regulatory Area of the Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization (NAFO)
I voted in favour of the report on the proposal for a regulation laying down conservation and enforcement measures applicable in the Regulatory Area of the Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization (NAFO). The aim of this proposal is to transpose into Union law the amendments to the conservation and enforcement measures adopted by NAFO at its 43rd annual meeting, which took place in September 2022. NAFO is the regional fisheries management organization (RFMO) responsible for managing the fisheries resources of the Northwest Atlantic. NAFO's conservation and management measures apply exclusively in NAFO's regulatory area on the high seas and, unless otherwise specified, to all fishing vessels used or intended to be used for commercial fishing activities targeting fishery resources. Currently, around 40 EU vessels fish in the NAFO regulatory area, with Spain and Portugal having the largest fleets.
