Application of the Regulation on the common organization of the markets in fishery and aquaculture products - Regulation (EU) No 1379/2013
I abstained from voting on the report on the application of the Regulation on the common organization of the markets in fishery and aquaculture products.
The Common Market Organization (CMO) Regulation in the fisheries sector covers provisions on traceability, market stability and consumer information. This report evaluates the current CMO, adopted in 2013, and makes recommendations for a possible future revision. Many of these ideas are useful and progressive, but the calls for the reintroduction of abolished concepts, such as storage aid, and the revision of existing legislation on the labeling and presentation of plant-based products, do not allow me to support the report. I do not agree with the argument that the commercial designation “fish” or “fish species” should be reserved for fishery or aquaculture products of animal origin. Consumers are not ignorant and are perfectly capable of understanding a label saying “plant-based fish finger” or “vegan alternative to fish”.
