Agreement with the Republic of Iceland on the modalities of its participation in the European Asylum Support Office

Brussels, June 1, 2023 - I voted in favor of the recommendation on the draft Council decision on the conclusion of the Agreement between the European Union and the Republic of Iceland on the modalities of its participation in the European Asylum Support Office.The Group of the Greens supports the European Asylum Agency and the possibility for associated states such as Iceland to participate in its activities, as they aim to support a high common standard of asylum procedures and reception conditions across the EU and associated states. We believe that the enhanced cooperation and harmonization made possible by greater participation in the Agency should serve the goal of establishing a robust Common European Asylum System (CEAS) based on high standards of protection. Our group remains vigilant with regard to the broader reform of the CEAS that is currently underway and which will ultimately determine whether the Agency will be able to realize this potential.
